Recently two lifelong lady friends and I stayed here for three nights in Manzanita to celebrate a common milestone birthday among us.  The house was clean and  is spacious.  It was easy to locate household items we needed. Everything worked out perfectly for us as we each had our own separate bedroom and bathroom spaces.    Given there is a guest house within 15 feet of the front door, one of us who keeps different hours and has sleep issues was happy to have her own space a little removed from us other two so as not to disturb us during the night if she was up and moving around.

The large common spaces are cozy, well furnished, and have woodland views which were pleasant to look out on as we conversed, read, snacked, drank wine, and reminisced. The location is a few blocks from the beach and also the village of Manzanita, which makes for easy walking. The setting is among other homes but quite private.

The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, appliances, utensils, etc. if you choose to cook.  We had trouble getting reservations for dining out even two nights ahead. We would recommend you make them in advance of your arrival, especially in the summertime.

A quick walk to town was a bonus, and the enclosed deck was great for our dogs. The entire house was very clean also.

Loved all the wood floors and the “Mother in-law” separate bedroom and bathroom. Clean and well kept in a quiet neighborhood.

Home and location are good. However, I think it would be better with at least one smart TV. The one TV there was outdated and useless. The home had no basic supplies like coffee or tea. I also think beach cruiser bikes would have been a nice addition to have at the home. Good otherwise.

Loved all the windows and natural lighting. It was so nice getting breezes through the house. Quiet neighborhood, and felt secluded with all the vegetation surrounding property. Can’t wait to return!

The house has a beautiful layout and lots of natural light and skylights, new wood floors. It was very clean, well maintained and the living room and spacious kitchen were open and appealing with woods in the background. Minimalist, Midcentury modern space was great for our needs and as a dog friendly house with gated yard, perfect for all 5 of us! We didn't need the bonus apartment with bedroom and bathroom which connects to the main house via deck but will definitely invite a friend next time to take advantage of this extra space.

Comfortable, sunny home with well-stocked kitchen

November 2021 R.N.

This is a great vacation home for two couples, as the detached en suite allows privacy, and there are two charming rooms to gather in.  Convenient location for walking to the beach and town.  The kitchen is easy to cook in, and we had a fun Scrabble night.  Only downside was the detached room had an off smell but it was okay with some airing out.

Spacious and comfy with some challenges

July 2021 E.R.

We just spent a wonderful week at Foswell and there were some definite positives and negatives. Overall, we enjoyed the home and found it to be well equipped with anything we needed.  Our biggest challenge with the property is the 2nd bedroom being in a separate DADU building. This doesn’t work for families with young children.

Positives: Comfortable light-filled home with a really great design.  Tons of windows and skylights everywhere. Plenty of places to sit. LOVED the big kitchen and open layout. Spacious: This house is incredibly spacious for the price, it’s actually quite a good value. There is a library/tv room with a pull out futon and doors that close. We ended up using this space as our 2nd bedroom. Great outdoor spaces, outdoor decks.

Negatives: bedroom situation - a little tough with kids or even 2 couples. General condition of the house - appliances were outdated and the exterior was dirty and in need of maintenance. Examples: cobwebs, dirty skylights, etc. Location: its a bit far from town and the beach but definitely walkable if you’re motivated. TV - there is one rather small tv for the entire home.

Quiet Ocean Retreat

July 2021 R.G.

We have stayed in this house before and love it.  It was a bit different this time because upon arrive, the center deck area was covered in feces from what I think might be a chipmunk.  There were spider webs all over the outside of the windows with feces in the webs. The window screens are all missing so the house was filled with flies and other flying critters.  Despite that, I would still recommend this house.  The beds are comfortable. It has three full baths with great showers.  The center deck is perfect for congregating (when clean).  This is a great house, just needs a good powerwashing and screens.

Note from owner: Over the years, the window screens have been damaged by folks who don’t understand how they work, so we were in between having them replaced during your stay.  We have a sound deterrent to keep critters off the deck, but it stopped working apparently.  We’ve replaced it and had the deck cleaned up.

Forest Retreat, Close to Beach

July 2021 T.H.

This house is a quiet, beautiful and spacious retreat.  Fully stocked kitchen, comfortable beds and trees all around. Close to everything. It’s a great place to get away from it all.

Great Home!

May 2021 G.R.

This was a cozy home away from home. We enjoyed the various spaces available and especially loved the oversized windows and overall design of the home - which was clearly designed for the lot. My husband used the office for his laptop. We used the cozy sunken living room space to watch some PGA golf one afternoon.  The kitchen was spacious and nice - also used the family room for family chats.  The location was great - could hear the ocean from the decks - but enjoyed being out of the downtown area. We enjoyed being a quick three minute drive to town (could walk if we didn’t have a bit of mobility issues). We took great care as always with our St Bernard and it was so nice that she was welcome.  I loved the accommodations, the location, and the kindness and care from the local agent and it felt like - the owners.  People in town were lovely and don’t miss the pet store!  We hope to stay here again - for longer next time.  (meant to also share that the property was spotless which means a lot to me)

Great brief stay

Very pleasant, clean and comfortable home

Great Stay

April 2021 J.B.

Second trip to Foswell and we love the house and location. Very clean and all the kitchen tools you need.  We love the split layout with the deck in between.  Used the house for remote work and the wireless was able to handle streaming video, etc. for meetings very well.  We’ll certainly stay again.

A Great Time!

April 2021 C.

We had a great time at the Foswell house! Our favorite part was the deck area between the main house and guest house where we could sit outside in the amazing spring weather with our dog and read books, have drinks, etc. The big windows and forested area around the house were so beautiful! We will definitely be back.

New norm at the beach

We love this house, and Manzanita.  It’s a bit of a walk from downtown which makes it quieter. Good house for dogs and humans. Well equipped. Full of light, even on a gray day.

Very clean, well maintained, older appliances

April 2021 A.M.

Nice stay, the management company is very good. We had an issue where our dog scratched up a rug, and the management company dealt with it very well.  Much appreciated.

House is odd in that there are two structures, separated by a courtyard.  Each has it’s own baths, etc. Not clear from the listing, not a problem, but would have been good to know ahead of time.

Appliances are older, though the kitchen has all the pots, pans and tools you’d expect.

Some odd requests like bagging all the laundry individually marked bags and starting loads, not are if these are covid procedures or normal. Not a problem, just unusual.

Great place

March 2021 K.

Great place to visit with dogs as they had a fenced area plus dog towels, bowls, etc.. We put their kennel in the spare room which worked out great for evenings. Great kitchen and amenities for cooking.

Well Located and clean

March 2021 C.B.

House was well located and close to town. It was also super clean. Our biggest issue is that the second bedroom is detached from the home and smelled weird. We decided not to use it and just stay in the main part of the home. My recommendation is to put in some work to making the detached bedroom cozier and inviting.  Upgrade the carpet so it smells better in there. The only reason why I would’t recommend this property is due to the second bedroom smell, flooring and it being detached.

Solid rain most of the time but the house was cozy and we enjoyed our visit

Great for a weekend trip to the Coast

January 2021 R.G.

Foswell was a wonderful place to stay for the long weekend at the coast. The great room was the highlight - a cozy place to gather for meals, read and play board games.  It gets great light during the day and feels private at night.

We only used the main bedroom in the house and the mattress left something to be desired (very springy) this is our only negative comment for an otherwise terrific spot.  The property description is accurate - the kitchen is fully stocked and the dog run was a bonus for letting out two dogs out to pee in the mornings.

The Perfect quiet ocean retreat

June 2020 K.H.

Amazing house with privacy for EVERYONE! 3 full bathrooms. Showers are amazing. Beds are comfy. Walking distance to everything. Perfect for the dogs with the deck and dog run. My new favorite Manzanita rental house.

Foswell

January 2020 M.S.

We loved the location and access to town and the beach.  The kitchen/living/dining area was roomy and very workable.  Master bedroom and bath worked well for us.  Beds were comfortable which was great since we were there for an extended vacation.  We would recommend this home to others and look forward to coming back.

Love the Location

July 2019 R.G.

Cute place in the woods but super easy to walk to town. Furnishings a little dated but kitchen is well stocked, there are tons of games, books, etc. We didn't love the layout. There’s quite a bit of space in the main house but only one true bedroom. The family room off the hallway has a futon (and a sliding door for privacy) and the main family room has a sleeper sofa but it would be odd to have someone sleep there since it's basically in the kitchen area. The detached cottage has a Murphy bed and bathroom but the room only has one window and got pretty hot. Small fenced area outside was great for our dog. Everything was very clean and tidy but there were a lot of cobwebs in the skylights. Bed in master bedroom was so-so and the bedspread on there could use an update.

Note from owner: Thanks for your review. The detached en-suite has two windows and a skylight, all of which open.  We only allow six people in the home, so there’s no need for anyone to sleep on the futon in the kitchen area.

End of Summer getaway

August 2019 R.G.

The house is a quiet retreat located up hill from town. The yard is not completely fenced even though it appears to be. Our dog escaped several times out the back. Very stressful. Please have a warning to dog owners about this or fence the side yard. The master bed is really uncomfortable and dated. The jetted tub does not work. The kitchen is well equipped but the right front element on the stove does not work. Lighting over the stove terrible. We liked sitting out on the deck looking at the forest with neighboring houses well disguised by foliage. The charcoal barbecue was very clean. We enjoyed some of the many board games but found the TV impossible to operate. Very confusing remotes. The whole house could do with updated furniture, better linens and a new master tub.

Manager's Response:  Thank you for your review. We appreciate the feedback. The house is not listed nor described as being fully fenced - it has an enclosed dog run. It would be stressful to have your dog escape ‘several times’ and not understand why. The mattresses on all the beds were replaced 2 years ago and it is unfortunate you did not find them comfortable. We are sorry it did not suit your needs for your stay. There is no description or photos of the jetted tub as the owners do not want it used.  When it is used, it will empty the water heater and it takes awhile to refill/reheat for any other uses. We have a sign near it stating the reason why we do not want it used.

Four-season haven!

July 2018 E.A.

Our family has been coming to Manzanita four or five times a year since 2001, and we have stayed in many homes in the town. Foswell is by far and away our most favorite spot to visit, in any season. The layout of the home is unbeatable for socializing. The long bar and kitchen, open next to a living and dining space, draw guests to gather around while meals are prepared. We've worked puzzles or played board games at the dining room table and still felt that we were in the middle of the action. The big corner windows in the living area are perfect for gazing, through both misty rain and tree-filtered sunshine. I've read countless novels there. In the summer the deck between the main home and the 'granny flat' across the landing is ideal for gathering to catch the sun or barbecue, or enjoy a cocktail while the sun goes down. We have brought friends to stay many times as well, and the separate accommodation space offers the right amount of privacy, while still allowing for easy access to the main home - you never feel that you’ll wake others up when you go across to make coffee in the morning! The house is filled with the generous architecture that you only seem to find at the beach, lots of quirky alcoves and window shapes, which add up to a beautifully bright home that feels as though it is sitting in the treetops.  It is a truly special and magical retreat.

2 Master Bedrooms!

November 2018 S.B.

We brought our daughter, son-in-law and grand kids here for a long weekend. The house is walking distance to town and the beach, in a quiet area. The layout of the house was perfect in that it has a bedroom with attached bath that is separate from the main house. The grand kids slept in the main house with us, while our daughter, who just had surgery, got some much needed late mornings in the separate bedroom. Would definitely visit this house again!
